On September 26, Reuters cited three sources as saying that the Trump administration is considering imposing tariffs on foreign electronic devices based on the number of chips in each device, in an attempt to encourage companies to shift manufacturing to the United States. Michael Strain, an economist at the conservative think tank American Enterprise Institute, said, "Currently, the United States is facing an inflation problem, with inflation rates significantly higher than the Federal Reserve target and still rising, and this plan could potentially raise consumer prices at this time." He added that, due to the new tariffs imposed on key inputs required to produce these goods, even products manufactured domestically in the United States could see price increases.
