On the 6th, the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that Jean-Nol Puailliez had taken office as the French Consul General in Nuuk that day, making France the first EU country to establish a consular institution on Greenland. According to the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in addition to providing routine consular services for French citizens, the consulate will also promote scientific cooperation with Greenland and provide guidance for French companies interested in investing and establishing offices there. Puailliez stated in an interview with French public radio on the 6th that there are currently only 8 French citizens living in Greenland. His appointment is to "support French interests" and promote cooperation between France and Greenland. According to French media reports, French President Macron announced during his visit to Greenland in June last year that France would establish a consulate there. French Foreign Minister Le Drian said in a media interview in January that France opening a consulate in Greenland was a "political signal." Since President Trump returned to the White House at the beginning of 2025, he has repeatedly threatened to acquire Greenland, even suggesting that "military seizure" was not ruled out. Europe has strongly reacted to this, stating that the sovereignty of Greenland is not negotiable.
