Edward Yau: The overall public housing construction volume in Hong Kong for the five-year period from 2026 to 2027 will reach 189,000 units.
Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam today delivered a new policy address in the Legislative Council of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. Lam stated that the overall public housing construction target for the five years starting from 2026-2027 will reach 189,000 units. She pointed out that three years ago, the average waiting time for public housing applicants was 6.1 years before they could "move in". After the efforts of this government for over three years, the overall waiting time for public housing has been reduced by a whole year to 5.1 years, further progressing towards the goal of reducing it to 4.5 years in the 2026-2027 period. For residents living in sub-divided units ("subdivided flats"), moving into public housing or "transitional public housing" one year earlier can not only improve their living environment, but also save an average of around 36,000 Hong Kong dollars or 50,000 Hong Kong dollars in rent each year.
