The elderly population aged 60 and above with Shanghai hukou accounted for 37.6% of the total population last year.
According to the civil affairs department of Shanghai, the office of the Shanghai Aging Work Committee, the Shanghai Civil Affairs Bureau, and the Shanghai Statistics Bureau have compiled and announced comprehensive statistics on the elderly population, aging industry, and elderly care services in Shanghai in 2024. The data shows that there are 5.7762 million elderly people aged 60 and above among Shanghai's registered population, accounting for 37.6% of the total population. The top three districts with the highest proportion of elderly people aged 60 and above in relation to the total population are Hongkou District, Huangpu District, and Chongming District, with proportions of 45.2%, 44.0%, and 43.9% respectively. The elderly dependency ratio, which measures the number of people aged 65 and above being supported by those aged 15-64, is 49.3%, an increase of 1.5 percentage points from the previous year.
