International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Grossi stated on May 15th that since May 7th, the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant has been powered only by one transmission line. The current Russia-Ukraine conflict has hindered the restoration of the backup line. According to data from the International Atomic Energy Agency, the remaining 330 kV backup power line was cut on May 7th. In 2022, all six reactors at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant stopped operating. Despite this, they still require external power supply to cool the fuel and minimize the risk of accidents. Before the outbreak of the conflict, the plant had 10 power lines to ensure reliable external power supply. Grossi pointed out that external power supply remains a weakness for nuclear safety and security at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant during the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Additionally, experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency have reported hearing gunfire near the nuclear power plant recently.
