On May 12th, China and the United States issued a joint statement at the Geneva Economic and Trade Talks, announcing a general reduction in U.S. tariffs on China. The lithium battery industry may see a turning point in exports to the United States. According to the statement, current U.S. tariffs on automotive lithium batteries from China have been reduced to 58.4%, and tariffs on non-automotive lithium batteries have decreased to around 41%. "Lower than expected, this is a major positive development," several lithium battery industry insiders told Caixin. U.S. lithium battery products themselves are subject to a 3.4% basic tariff. In August 2024, the United States imposed an additional 25% tariff on Chinese automotive lithium batteries. Prior to the announcement of the joint statement, the cumulative import tariffs on Chinese automotive lithium batteries were as high as 173.4% and non-automotive lithium batteries were around 156% based on the 145% tariffs on China announced by the White House on April 10th.
