JPMorgan: CATL's (03750.HK) acquisition of battery assets signals the start of industry consolidation; maintains "Overweight" rating.
Zhitong Finance APP has learned that JPMorgan issued a research report stating that CATL (03750.HK) has been approved to acquire equity in Chongqing Yaoning New Energy Technology Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Geely Automobile (00175.HK), which owns a nearly completed 24 gigawatt-hour (GWh) battery production project. The report believes that this transaction is not merely capacity expansion, but may be an early signal that China's battery industry is entering a consolidation phase, reflecting the challenges facing original equipment manufacturers' (OEMs) strategy of building their own battery capacity, while also highlighting the strategic value of approved capacity assets. The bank noted that CATL remains its top pick in China's battery value chain, with a target price of HK$725 and an "Overweight" rating.
