Gregory So: Hong Kong is actively promoting the strategic development of future industries such as artificial intelligence.
Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Carrie Lam, attended the first Hong Kong Robotics Industry Summit and 2026 Smart Element Cooperation Partners Conference today. In her speech, she stated that the nation's "14th Five-Year Plan" has a forward-looking layout for future industries, supporting robotics as a new economic growth point. The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region actively aligns with national strategies and the "AI+" initiative to promote the development of strategic future industries such as robotics.
Carrie Lam introduced that the InnoHK innovation research and development platform established by the SAR government has funded 16 laboratories focusing on AI and robotics, with a focus on AI-driven robotics technology used in various industries such as healthcare, logistics, intelligent manufacturing, and construction. Cyberport also supports around 120 enterprises involved in humanoid robots, autonomous driving, drones, and smart wearable devices. Carrie Lam pointed out that Hong Kong's highly internationalized, culturally diverse, and compact urban environment provides an ideal testing ground and application scenario for robotics. Whether it is service robots, medical care applications, or intelligent manufacturing, there are rich and challenging application spaces that help relevant technologies connect with the international market.
To further promote AI-driven industries, the SAR government will establish an "AI+ Industrial Development Strategy Committee," inviting experts, scholars, enterprises, and innovative science and technology park companies to participate, focusing initially on life health and robotics, to formulate strategies for AI-driven industrial transformation. Carrie Lam stated that the SAR government's wholly-owned Hong Kong Artificial Intelligence Research Institute will be operational in the second half of the year, aiming to promote upstream AI research, middle and downstream result transformation, and explore application scenarios, building a platform for AI technology solutions matching and accelerating commercialization and industrial empowerment of solutions, including robotics.
