The United States Postal Service announced plans to increase the price of "forever stamps" by about 5%, from 78 cents to 82 cents starting from July 12. The agency also plans to raise the mailing price for domestic postcards by 6.6%, from 61 cents to 65 cents. The cost of mailing international postcards will increase by 2.9%, from $1.70 to $1.75. The proposed price increase must be approved by the Postal Regulatory Commission, a federal agency responsible for overseeing rates and mail services of the USPS. The USPS stated in a written statement, "The Postal Service is utilizing all available tools, including available regulatory pricing authority, to ensure that we can continue to fulfill our universal service obligation and serve the American people."
