The international conference calls for joint efforts to address the challenge of space debris.
The 2026 Space Debris Conference, hosted by the Saudi Space Agency, opened in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia on the 26th, with participants calling for the international community to jointly address the challenge of space debris. The conference, supported by the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs, also includes the International Telecommunication Union and is planned to continue until the 27th. The aim of the conference is to raise awareness of the risks of space debris in the international community, support the future of space economy, discuss improving relevant policies and regulations, promoting scientific research and innovation, and building an effective international governance framework. Mohammed Tamimi, Acting CEO of the Saudi Space Agency, stated in his opening speech that with the rapid increase in the number of objects and debris in Earth's orbit, the safety and sustainability of space activities are facing increasingly severe challenges, and countries urgently need to strengthen international cooperation and adopt innovative and effective solutions.
