The National Bureau of Statistics announced that in August 2026, the national consumer price index for residents increased by 0.8% compared to the same period last year.
In August 2026, the national consumer price index (CPI) rose by 0.8% year-on-year. Among them, urban areas saw an increase of 0.8%, while rural areas saw an increase of 0.7%; food prices fell by 1.4%, while non-food prices rose by 1.2%; consumer goods prices increased by 0.8%, and service prices also rose by 0.8%. From January to August, the average national consumer price index increased by 0.9% compared to the same period last year. In August, the national consumer price index rose by 0.4% month-on-month. Among them, urban areas rose by 0.4%, and rural areas also rose by 0.4%; food prices rose by 0.4%, and non-food prices rose by 0.3%; consumer goods prices rose by 0.6%, while service prices rose by 0.1%.
I. Year-on-year Changes in Prices of Various Goods and Services
In August, the prices of food, tobacco, alcohol, and dining out decreased by 0.7% year-on-year, contributing about 0.21 percentage points to the CPI decline. Within food, prices for meat fell by 5.1%, contributing approximately 0.21 percentage points to the CPI decline, with pork prices dropping by 11.8%; fresh vegetable prices fell by 2.8%, contributing about 0.05 percentage points to the CPI decline; dairy prices decreased by 1.4%, contributing about 0.01 percentage points to the CPI decline; aquatic product prices dropped by 0.6%, contributing about 0.01 percentage points to the CPI decline; egg prices rose by 15.0%, contributing about 0.07 percentage points to the CPI increase.
Among the other seven categories, six experienced price increases and one experienced a decrease. Specifically, prices for other goods and services, healthcare, and transportation and communication rose by 7.3%, 2.7%, and 2.5% respectively, while prices for education, culture, entertainment, clothing, and daily necessities and services increased by 1.4%, 1.3%, and 0.7% respectively; housing prices decreased by 0.3%.
II. Month-on-month Changes in Prices of Various Goods and Services
In August, the prices of food, tobacco, alcohol, and dining out rose by 0.3% month-on-month, contributing about 0.07 percentage points to the CPI increase. Within food, fresh vegetable prices rose by 5.5%, contributing about 0.09 percentage points to the CPI increase; egg prices rose by 2.0%, contributing about 0.01 percentage points to the CPI increase; meat prices rose by 0.9%, contributing about 0.03 percentage points to the CPI increase, with pork prices increasing by 1.3%; fresh fruit prices fell by 2.5%, contributing about 0.05 percentage points to the CPI decline; aquatic product prices dropped by 0.9%, contributing about 0.02 percentage points to the CPI decline.
Among the other seven categories, two recorded increases, three remained stable, and two experienced decreases month-on-month. Specifically, transportation and communication, and other goods and services prices rose by 1.7% and 1.5% respectively; housing, education, culture, entertainment, and healthcare prices remained unchanged; prices for daily necessities and services, and clothing decreased by 0.2% and 0.1% respectively.
