On September 9, the Hong Kong Census and Statistics Department released the results of the business conditions survey for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in August 2026. The current business revenue trend index for SMEs rose from 43.8 in July 2026 (indicating a contraction) to 44.1 in August 2026, while the business revenue outlook index for the next month (September 2026) stands at 47.6.
Analyzing by industry, some sectors surveyed saw an increase in their current business revenue trend index in August 2026 compared to the previous month, particularly in the catering industry (up from 40.2 to 44.0) and the real estate sector (up from 45.2 to 48.5).
The current trend index for new orders in the import and export trade fell from 45.0 in July 2026 to 44.8 in August 2026, while the outlook index for new orders for the next month (September 2026) is 47.4.
A spokesperson for the Hong Kong government stated that the business atmosphere for SMEs improved in August. The current business revenue trend index reached its highest level in three months, while the outlook index reached its highest level in six months. The outlook index for the real estate sector remains above the expansion threshold of 50 points; at the same time, the business outlook for the catering and retail sectors recorded significant improvements among all industries. Overall employment conditions remained relatively stable.
Looking ahead, the steady growth of the Hong Kong economy will continue to support business confidence. However, external adverse factors are still evolving. The Hong Kong government will continue to monitor the situation closely.
