U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday that India has proposed cutting all tariffs on American goods, but he played down the urgency of reaching a trade agreement with the world's fourth-largest economy. Trump said he is seeking to reduce barriers to American exports, using India as an example. "They've made it almost impossible to do business. You know, they charge us 100%," Trump said. But Trump also sent mixed signals on the extent to which a deal could be reached, saying "it's going to happen very soon. But I'm not in a rush. You know, everybody wants to make a deal with us." He added that he isn't "making a deal with everybody." These comments suggest that while Trump plans to negotiate trade agreements with some countries before the policy of suspending higher tariffs on imports in July expires, many countries will only see the tax rates they will face determined unilaterally by the United States. Earlier on Friday, Trump said he plans to set new import tariffs for trading partners in the "next two to three weeks." The Trump administration prioritizes trade negotiations with several countries, including India, but due to a lack of manpower and capacity, it cannot negotiate with all countries involved in so-called retaliatory tariffs at the same time. Trump also raised the prospect of expanding trade with India's rival Pakistan. He had previously stated that this was a factor in U.S. mediation between the two countries earlier this month. "I'm using trade to solve disputes and achieve peace," Trump said.
