Former French President Sarkozy is found guilty of receiving illegal campaign funding.
On September 25th local time, the Paris court ruled on the case of former French President Sarkozy illegally accepting campaign funding from former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi during the 2007 presidential election. Sarkozy was found guilty. Prior to this, the Paris prosecutor's office charged Sarkozy with illegally accepting campaign funding from Gaddafi and requested a sentence of 7 years in prison and a fine of 300,000 euros. Sarkozy served as President of France from 2007 to 2012 and has been involved in several legal proceedings in recent years. On February 14, 2024, Sarkozy was convicted of illegally using campaign funds during the 2012 election and sentenced to 1 year in prison, with 6 months suspended and 6 months to be served outside of prison. On December 18, 2024, the French Supreme Court made a final ruling on Sarkozy's corruption case, sentencing him to 3 years in prison, during which he will not be incarcerated and will wear an electronic monitoring device for the first year of his sentence.
