The giant Grasberg copper mine in Indonesia has been shut down, leading to further pressure on the already difficult relationship between mining company Freeport-McMoran Inc. and the Indonesian government, which has been seeking greater control. On Wednesday, Freeport announced that the contract supply was facing force majeure. Two weeks ago, about 800,000 tons of slurry flooded its underground pipeline. Two workers died and five others went missing. The US-listed company significantly lowered its production expectations, causing its stock to drop by 17% and driving up copper futures prices to their highest levels in over a year.
