Merkel said Germany is currently going through one of the most challenging stages.
On September 24th local time, German Chancellor Merkel stated during a general debate in the Federal Parliament on the 2026 federal budget that Germany is currently facing "one of the most challenging phases in modern history," and that economic growth, social stability, and national competitiveness must be promoted through real reforms. She emphasized the need to meet with key industries such as automotive and steel, as well as unions and representatives from various state governments, to study further measures to safeguard industry development and job prospects. Merkel announced that the Cabinet will hold a two-day special meeting next week to focus on national competitiveness and modernization of the government system, and will present specific reform measures on the second day for Federal Parliament deliberation.
