The trial regarding the cancellation mechanism of Amazon membership started this week. The FTC accused it of deceiving users with automatic renewal.
The long-awaited trial of Amazon by the US Federal Trade Commission began this week, with the e-commerce giant's membership cancellation mechanism becoming the focus of scrutiny. The lawsuit was filed by the Biden administration in 2023, accusing Amazon of luring millions of consumers to sign up for its Prime membership service through deceptive user interface design and making it difficult to cancel memberships. An Amazon spokesperson said, "Ultimately, neither Amazon nor the individual defendants have done anything wrong. We still believe that the facts will prove the actions of these executives to be appropriate, and we always prioritize our customers." The trial is expected to last about a month, with jury selection beginning on Monday and opening arguments scheduled for Tuesday. If the jury rules that Amazon has violated the law, the judge will determine the amount of damages Amazon must pay.
