The Supreme Court of the United States hinted on Monday that it will consider overturning a nearly century-old precedent to expand the president's power in shaping independent agencies. The Supreme Court agreed to hear the case of Rebecca Slaughter, a Democratic member of the Federal Trade Commission who was fired by Trump, and was reinstated by a lower court judgment based on a 90-year-old ruling known as the "Humphrey's Executor case". Previously, the Supreme Court unanimously ruled that members of independent regulatory agencies could only be removed for cause or malfeasance. Gretchen Willecox of the National Labor Relations Board and Casey Harris of the Federal Service Impasses Panel have also requested that if the Supreme Court takes up Slaughter's case, they should also review their cases. The Supreme Court has allowed the president to temporarily dismiss the three members mentioned above, but also hinted that the power of dismissal may be limited in the case of the Federal Reserve, which is expected to be tested by the dismissal of former Federal Reserve Governor Cook.
