Aviation Industry Group Expert: The aerodynamic layout of the J-20 is the first of its kind internationally.
At the 2025 Changchun Airshow, the J-20, which was statically displayed for the first time, impressed the audience with its oppressive aerodynamic shape and exquisite craftsmanship, showcasing the beauty of China's aviation industry. On September 20th, Gong Feng, the chief technical expert of the Aviation Industry Group and deputy chief designer of the Chengdu Institute, introduced the unique aspects of the J-20's aerodynamic design in an interview with the media. Gong Feng stated that the J-20's integrated aerodynamic layout of "lifting body edge flap duckbill tail" is a global first. "The J-20 is China's first independently developed fifth-generation stealth fighter. After more than 10 years of research and development, it has filled the gap in China's airborne stealth combat capability, breakthrough in core technologies such as high stealth, high-performance platform, and strong collaborative combat, leading the technological development, innovative R&D system, building outstanding teams, and becoming a landmark in China's new era of aviation equipment, a powerful weapon to defend the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation." Gong Feng further explained that in terms of aerodynamic design, the J-20 effectively utilizes the beneficial aerodynamic effects produced by the coupling of "duckbill vortex-edge vortex-wing vortex". In terms of flight control, it adopts a relaxed longitudinal and directional instability technology to solve the three-axis coupling effects caused by the vertical tail. It has achieved a comprehensive design of "high stealth, high lift, low drag, strong control".
