South Korea's Wolsong nuclear power plant leaked around 265 kilograms of heavy water.
On the 19th, the Nuclear Safety Commission of South Korea reported that a heavy water leak occurred at a nuclear power plant in the southeast of the country, and no abnormal radiation has been detected so far. The commission has dispatched staff to investigate the cause of the leak at the nuclear power plant where the incident occurred. According to Yonhap News Agency, the No. 2 unit of the Wolseong Nuclear Power Plant in Gyeongju City, North Gyeongsang Province, reported a heavy water leak on the 19th. The Nuclear Safety Commission of South Korea estimated that as of noon on that day, approximately 265 kilograms of heavy water had leaked. At present, the leaked heavy water is all within the facility and has not leaked outside the nuclear power plant, and no abnormal radiation levels have been found around the plant. When the leak occurred, the unit was in a routine shutdown for maintenance. The Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co., responsible for operating the unit, said that they immediately shut down the relevant nuclear pumps after detecting the leak. This is the second leak incident reported at the Wolseong Nuclear Power Plant this year. On January 12, while the No. 2 unit of the Wolseong plant was operating normally, approximately 29 tons of unanalyzed nuclear waste liquid from a storage tank was discharged into the sea.
