In our country, the area of desertification and sandy land has continued to shrink, with a focus on governance areas achieving a historic shift from "sand advancing, people retreating" to "green advancing, sand retreating." China has 257 million hectares of desertified land, accounting for 27% of the national land area, mainly distributed in the northwest, northeast, and north China. Through the implementation of key projects such as the Three-North Shelterbelt System construction and returning farmland to forests and grasslands, the area of sandy land in China has continued to decrease by an average of 670,000 hectares per year, compared to an average expansion of 340,000 hectares at the end of the 20th century. The total soil erosion in China's eight major deserts and four major sandy areas has decreased by about 40% since 2000, with an average vegetation cover of 20.22%, an increase of 2.6% from ten years ago. The frequency of sand and dust weather events in the past decade has decreased by 30% compared to the previous decade. Huang Caiyi, director of the Desertification Department of the State Forestry and Grassland Administration, introduced that since the 14th Five-Year Plan, the comprehensive treatment of desertification in the Three-North Project has exceeded 200 million mu, and the area of desertification and sandy land continues to shrink. In key governance areas, a historic shift from "sand advancing, people retreating" to "green advancing, sand retreating" has been achieved, leading the way towards the goal of zero growth of land degradation by 2030. By developing high-quality grassland, economic orchards, Chinese medicinal materials, desert tourism, and other industries tailored to local conditions, the desert regions produce 48 million tons of dried and fresh fruits annually, accounting for about 1/4 of the national total production, with an annual total output value of 120 billion yuan. The income from forestry and fruit production in key areas accounts for more than 50% of farmers' net income.
