Coinbase discloses data breach incident in December affecting over 69,000 users
According to The Block, Coinbase has submitted documents to the Maine Attorney General's Office confirming that a data breach in December 2024 affected 69,461 users. Hackers obtained system permissions by bribing overseas customer service personnel, stealing Know Your Customer (KYC) information including names, addresses, and emails, but not passwords, private keys, or user funds. The documents show that the hackers demanded a ransom of $20 million threatening to release the data publicly. Coinbase had previously stated that the affected users were less than 1% of the total, and they estimate that the cost of remediation will range from $180 million to $400 million.
