The China Public Diplomacy Association held the "Linja 7th Salon" event in Beijing, with Liang Jianjun, Deputy Director of the Asian Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, discussing the new era of China's diplomacy towards neighboring countries and exchanging views with Chinese and foreign media. Regarding how the China-US trade situation will affect China-ASEAN economic and trade cooperation, Liang Jianjun stated that the diversification of China's export market and the decrease in exports to the United States have not led to a significant increase in exports to ASEAN. "Without the United States, the world will still turn, and the sun will rise in the east as usual," Liang Jianjun said. "We understand that openness leads to prosperity, and closing leads to decline. We will resolutely carry out our own affairs and steadfastly promote high-level opening-up. The door to openness will only get wider." Regarding the argument that the so-called "tariff war will lead to Chinese products impacting the surrounding markets," Liang Jianjun refuted it with data at the meeting. He pointed out that Trump launched a tariff war against China in his first term in 2017, at which time the US accounted for 19.2% of China's exports, which has now dropped to 14.6%; meanwhile, China's exports to ASEAN have steadily increased from 12% to around 15% during the same period.
