In the coming week, there will be an above-average amount of precipitation in South China. The Pearl River Commission reminds to be vigilant against flooding in small and medium rivers, as well as mountain flood disasters.
On May 19, the Pearl River Water Resources Commission of the Ministry of Water Resources held a meeting to deploy recent flood and drought prevention work. The Pearl River Hydrological Forecast Center predicts that in the coming week, due to the combined influence of cold and warm air, there will still be continuous rainfall in the central and northern parts of the Pearl River Basin. The water levels of the main stream of the West River and its tributaries such as the Liu River and the Gui River will continue to rise, with a high risk of floods and flash floods in the areas of heavy rainfall. In the northern and eastern parts of Guangxi, the central and northern parts of Guangdong, some small and medium-sized rivers in concentrated rainfall areas may experience floods exceeding the alert level, and it is advised that relevant areas take measures to prevent floods and flash floods.
The Pearl River Commission will strengthen unified scheduling in the basin, and will optimize the scheduling plans for major reservoirs such as Dateng Gorge and Changzhou Canal based on the development of the flood situation to fully utilize the flood control benefits of reservoirs. Currently, both drought and floods exist in the Pearl River Basin, with the drought situation in Yunnan not yet resolved, and multiple rounds of heavy rainfall have occurred in regions such as Guangxi and Guangdong. Since May 14, there has been widespread and continuous heavy rainfall in the Pearl River Basin, with 18 rivers including the He River, a tributary of the West River, and the Ba River, a tributary of the Nanpan River, experiencing floods exceeding the alert level. The Pearl River Flood Control Headquarters and the Pearl River Commission have simultaneously activated the level IV emergency response for flood prevention and defense on May 18th.
