Multiple construction sites have started prohibiting workers from taking packed meals home, informed sources say this is mainly to address the issue of workers taking more food than they need and hoarding it.
Recently, reporters learned that ByteDance offices in various cities have started to ban employees from bringing in food from outside. An employee at a ByteDance office in Beijing told reporters that they recently received an internal notice stating that workplace meals, snacks, fruits, beverages, and tea should be consumed on the premises and should not be taken out. The notice also stated that taking food out of the workplace violates the company's catering regulations, and individuals who seriously violate this rule may face penalties such as refunds, warnings, or even dismissal. There have also been adjustments to the lunch break policy, with the Shenzhen office, where employees were allowed to turn off the lights and nap during lunch break, announcing that lights should not be turned off during nap time. Due to overcrowding in the office, both Beijing and Shenzhen offices have started to restrict the use of folding beds. Several ByteDance employees told reporters that folding beds are no longer allowed in public areas for napping. When asked for comment on the above situations, ByteDance had not responded by the time of publication. However, an internal source at ByteDance told reporters that the adjustments to the food policy were mainly to address the issue of people taking and hoarding excess amounts of food, and that dining in the workplace would not be affected. Regarding nap time, there is no policy against taking a nap, and employees can nap at their desks according to their personal needs, but the main concern is to avoid personal belongings blocking fire safety exits and public areas.
