Crypto exchange Coinbase stated on Thursday that the company's customer data had been stolen by hackers, who demanded $20 million to prevent public disclosure. Coinbase said the hacker's demand was made on Monday. The company stated in a release that the hacker's goal was to collect a list of contactable customers, while posing as Coinbase, in order to deceive customers into handing over cryptocurrency. The company refused the hacker's $20 million ransom. Coinbase also stated that it will compensate customers who were scammed into sending money to the attackers, with compensation possibly ranging from $180 million to $400 million. Coinbase's shares fell 5% during trading.
