The Taiwan Affairs Office discusses the cross-strait relationship in the one year since Lai Ching-te took office.
On the morning of May 14th, the Taiwan Affairs Office held a routine press conference. Reporter: Lai Ching-te has been in office for nearly a year now, with a poll showing that 79.5% of the people on the island are dissatisfied with his governance, with 40.5% of them dissatisfied with his handling of cross-strait relations. How do you evaluate Lai Ching-te's performance in cross-strait relations over the past year in office? Taiwan Affairs Office Spokesperson Chen Binhua: Since Lai Ching-te's administration took office, it has gone against the mainstream public opinion on the island, refusing to acknowledge the "1992 Consensus" and persistently adhering to a "Taiwan independence" position, promoting separatist fallacies, manipulating anti-China sentiments, intensifying "green terror," obstructing cross-strait exchanges; fabricating false narratives like "democracy resisting authoritarianism" in an attempt to deceive the people on the island and mislead international public opinion; disregarding economic laws, seeking to decouple cross-strait economic and trade ties, break industrial links, and harm the interests and well-being of businesses and people on the island; ingratiating to external forces, selling out and harming Taiwan, attempting to "rely on external forces for independence" and "use force for independence." Its actions have escalated cross-strait confrontation, undermined peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, and fully demonstrated that it is a "destroyer of cross-strait peace" and a "creator of Taiwan Strait crisis." Both sides of the strait belong to one China, and Taiwan is an indivisible part of China's territory. Regardless of what Lai Ching-te says or does, it cannot change this objective fact. The reunification of both sides of the strait is inevitable and will eventually happen. No matter how the situation changes on the island of Taiwan or how external forces try to disrupt, they cannot stop this historical trend. We hope that the broad Taiwanese compatriots will stand on the right side of history with us, resolutely oppose separatism and outside interference, firmly safeguard the common homeland of the Chinese nation, work together and create a beautiful future of national unity and rejuvenation of the nation.
