Trump's sudden proposal of unification scares the Taiwan authorities.
According to Taiwan media such as Central News Agency, on May 13th, local time, US President Trump held a press conference at the White House to comment on the negotiations between the United States and China on trade issues. During his speech, he suddenly mentioned that the outcome of the negotiations would be beneficial for "unity and peace", leading to speculation that the negotiations may involve the Taiwan issue and causing high attention in Taiwan. In response, a spokesperson for the office of Taiwan leader Lai Ching-te urgently stated that the Taiwan authorities currently do not have information on negotiations related to Taiwan.
According to reports, during the press conference at the White House on May 12th, Trump first praised the progress of US mediation in resolving military conflicts between India and Pakistan, as well as the ceasefire between the US and Houthi rebels in Yemen. He then mentioned the recent high-level economic and trade talks between China and the United States held in Geneva, Switzerland. According to media reports such as Fox News, Trump said regarding the progress of the Geneva talks, "I think it will be great for China, great for us, and also great for unity and peace."
