Tesla Robotaxi safety under investigation by US regulators, FSD system becomes focus.
US regulators are stepping up their scrutiny of Tesla's Robotaxi program. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has sent the company a list of questions, as part of an ongoing investigation into Tesla's full self-driving software. The agency wants to understand how the FSD system performs in adverse conditions like fog, rain, or strong sunlight, and is asking how Tesla plans to safely test the Robotaxi on public roads. The investigation began in October 2024, after four accidents involving the FSD system in low visibility environments. Currently, Tesla's FSD still requires drivers to remain alert and keep their hands on the steering wheel. However, CEO Elon Musk has stated that the upcoming Robotaxi version will allow for completely unsupervised driving. Regulators want to confirm if the new system is the same as the current road version, and have also inquired about the number of vehicles, the usage area, and Tesla's safety verification methods.
