On May 12 local time, African Union Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat held his first press conference in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, after taking office, presenting his vision for the strategic direction of the new leadership of the African Union Commission. Mahamat emphasized that peace and security issues are of paramount importance, and called for a coordinated response from the African continent to ongoing political crises. In terms of public health, Mahamat expressed concern about the increasing infectious disease epidemics on the African continent, and called for urgent investment in disease surveillance and emergency response systems in Africa. When discussing economic issues, Mahamat reiterated the African Union's commitment to expanding the African Continental Free Trade Area.
