On May 8th, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian presided over a regular press conference. A Reuters reporter asked about comments made by Taiwan's Lai Ching-te to Western diplomats, stating that Taiwan and Europe are facing a new threat from an authoritarian group. What is the spokesperson's response to this? Lin Jian stated that this year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, as well as the 80th anniversary of Taiwan's recovery. In 1945, Taiwan returned to China as a result of the victory of World War II and an important part of the post-war international order. A series of internationally legally binding documents such as the Cairo Declaration, the Potsdam Proclamation, and the Instrument of Surrender of Japan confirmed China's sovereignty over Taiwan and laid the foundation for the post-war international order. Lin Jian pointed out that the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has always tried to hide the nature of "Taiwan independence" under the guise of "democracy and freedom," and no matter what they say or do, they cannot change the historical and legal fact that Taiwan is part of China's territory. It also cannot change the universal consensus of the international community on the One China principle. Lin Jian emphasized that we demand that relevant countries abide by the political commitments made to China on the Taiwan issue, effectively restrain relevant personnel from supporting and stage-holding for the "Taiwan independence" separatist forces, and not send any wrong signals to the separatist forces.
