The first batch of Chinese cargo ships subject to a 145% tariff arrived at the Port of Los Angeles, prompting warnings from industry insiders that expensive and scarce days are ahead.
President Trump has imposed a 145% tariff on China and targeted Chinese ships, leading to difficult circumstances for American consumers. On May 6th, CNN reported that after Trump announced the so-called "reciprocal tariffs", the amount of imports from China to the US sharply decreased. Several industry insiders have warned that in the coming weeks, American consumers will face price hikes and shortages of certain goods. "This week, our freight volume has dropped by about 35% compared to the same period last year," said Gene Seroka, Executive Director of the Port of Los Angeles, in an interview that day. Seroka also mentioned that the freight volume of the ships arriving at the Port of Los Angeles after Trump announced the "reciprocal tariffs" has significantly decreased, with the quantity of goods imported from China dropping by over 50%.
