Merkel officially elected as Germany's new Chancellor will be sworn in today.
On May 6th local time, the German Federal Parliament held a plenary session to elect a new Chancellor. After a secret ballot, Friedrich Merz, the candidate of the German Union Party, received the support of the majority of the members of the Federal Parliament and was officially elected as the new Chancellor of Germany. Subsequently, Merz will go to the German Presidential Palace to receive the appointment certificate from Federal President Steinmeier. After receiving the appointment certificate, official power will be formally transferred to the new Chancellor. Merz will then immediately return to the Federal Parliament to be sworn in.
