The Governor of the Bank of Korea stated that the volatility in the foreign exchange market may continue, and the bank will maintain its loose monetary policy.
The governor of the Bank of Korea, Lee Chang-yeol, said on Tuesday that due to global economic and domestic political uncertainties, fluctuations in the foreign exchange market may continue for some time, while reiterating the need to maintain loose monetary policy to boost the South Korean economy. Lee Chang-yeol said regarding the recent appreciation of the Korean won against the US dollar: "It is too early to say whether the exchange rate has hit bottom now," and he said, "We are unsure whether the US wants a strong dollar or a weak dollar." He mentioned the direction of monetary policy, stating, "Do not doubt the loose monetary policy cycle," and saying that the Bank of Korea may have to lower economic growth expectations, while "fully" reducing borrowing costs to boost the economy.
