Canadian Defense Minister David McGuinty confirmed on the 17th that the accident at the Wainwright military base in Alberta in western Canada that day had caused casualties, but he did not disclose the specific number of casualties. McGuinty held a press conference in Ottawa late that night and said that the Department of National Defense is closely monitoring the development of the situation and will release more information later. According to Canadian media reports, an explosion occurred at the military base and triggered a fire, causing at least 7 deaths and dozens of injuries. The reports said that a live-fire training exercise was underway at the base at the time of the incident, and bullets may have hit a natural gas pipeline or gas well and triggered the explosion. The fire has now been brought under control.
