As of the end of September, the number of people covered by basic old-age insurance in China reached 1.079 billion.

The State Council Information Office held this morning a press conference in its series on "Getting Off to a Good Start in the 15th Five-Year Plan." A relevant official from the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security briefed on progress in promoting high-quality development of employment and social security. On the social security front, as of the end of September, the number of people covered by basic old-age insurance, unemployment insurance, and work-related injury insurance nationwide reached 1.079 billion, 251 million, and 327 million, respectively, with the three social insurance funds accumulating a combined surplus of 11.2 trillion yuan. Going forward, China will encourage and support people in flexible employment and new forms of employment to participate in employee old-age insurance, actively carry out pilot programs to expand the coverage of enterprise annuities, solidly advance the implementation of the private pension system, improve policies for transferring and continuing social security relationships, actively promote nationwide access to more social security services and the universal use of social security cards, and strengthen oversight of social security fund safety and value preservation and appreciation, so that social security is more substantive, more optimized, and more reliable.
