Reporter learned from China National Petroleum Corporation today that China's largest oilfield in the desert, the Hade-Fuman Oilfield, has extracted more than 26 million tons of oil and gas from below 6,000 meters. Recently, the Zhentan 1 well, located on the northern edge of the Taklamakan Desert, successfully retrieved rock cores from a depth of 8,080 meters underground. These cores have lain dormant underground for about 500 million years. This is China's first retrieval of rock cores from below 8,000 meters on the northwestern margin of the Tarim Basin.
