Cui Dongshu: China accounted for 32% of the world's auto market share from January to August 2026.
Cui Dongshu, Secretary-General of the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), wrote that according to statistics from the Organisation Internationale des Constructeurs d'Automobiles (OICA), global cumulative auto sales for January-August 2026 totaled 63.43 million units. By country, China sold 20.31 million units, a 32.0% share, down notably from 35.4% in 2025; the United States sold 10.94 million units, a 17.2% share, a slight decline; India performed strongly, with its share rising to 6.7%, becoming a growth highlight. Looking at share changes over the years, China's global share continued to rise from 2022 to 2025, reaching a high in 2025. The shares of major European countries were broadly stable with a slight decline, while emerging markets such as Brazil and Russia maintained stable shares. The decline in China's market sales in the first eight months of 2026 was the core reason for the change in global share. The rapid growth of emerging markets such as India partially offset the growth pressure from the Chinese and U.S. markets, supporting the global auto market in maintaining slight positive growth. Global auto sales for January-August 2026 grew 2%, with India's auto market sales up 20%, Thailand's auto market up 16%, Russia's market sales up 6%, and Vietnam up 28%. Emerging markets drove relatively good market performance.
