Switzerland's total glacier ice volume has shrunk by nearly one-fifth over the past five years.
The Swiss Academy of Sciences released a bulletin on the 1st citing the latest data from the Swiss Glacier Monitoring Network, stating that over the past five years, the total ice volume of Swiss glaciers has decreased by nearly one-fifth. The bulletin said that in 2026, the ice volume of Swiss glaciers decreased by 5.5%, the second-largest loss on record, surpassed only by 2022. The average thickness of individual glaciers decreased by 2.5 to 4 meters, and this summer the ice layer in some glacier tongue areas even decreased by 10 meters.
