The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has allocated additional frequency resources to assist the meteorological department in responding to extreme weather conditions.
To address the increasing frequency of extreme weather events such as severe convective storms, heavy rainfall, and typhoons, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology recently allocated additional P-band radio frequency resources to meteorological departments for technical trials of the BeiDou Satellite Navigation Meteorological Sounding System. This initiative aims to enhance China's capacity to respond to extreme weather conditions. The P-band BeiDou Satellite Navigation Meteorological Sounding System is a domestically developed high-altitude meteorological detection system that utilizes BeiDou satellite positioning technology. Compared to the traditional L-band sounding system that relies on radar positioning, it offers advantages such as lower propagation loss and higher link reliability, significantly improving the accuracy of high-altitude wind measurements. This system increases the efficiency of radio frequency usage and contributes to the enhancement of intelligent capabilities in our sounding operations. The newly allocated P-band radio frequency resources will primarily be used for experimental services such as sounding balloon observations during extreme weather, increased observations during flood seasons, and drift observations, further strengthening the meteorological departments' abilities in disaster prevention and mitigation as well as in addressing climate change, especially regarding extreme weather.
