According to sources familiar with the matter, Andy Burnham is working on a plan to expand the commercial department and appoint Jonathan Reynolds as the British Secretary for Business again. On Friday, Burnham declared in his speech officially assuming the position as the new leader of the British Labour Party that he will implement a "pro-business" policy. He stated that the cabinet lineup has not been finalized yet, but party colleagues indicate that the framework of the core leadership has already been established. After the 2024 general election, Reynolds served as the Secretary for Business in the cabinet of Sir Keir Starmer until the cabinet reshuffle last September, when he was moved to the position of Chief Whip. Several Labour party members and business representatives have expressed that Reynolds is highly likely to return to his previous position; he was well-regarded by union leaders and some business executives during his time as the Secretary for Business. Reynolds has confided in several people that he does not feel suited for the Chief Whip role. If he returns to the position of Secretary for Business, he may be given more responsibilities related to energy and technology policy.
