Think tank: UK public finances fall short by $440 billion, new prime minister faces challenge.
According to an estimate by a think tank, the UK public finances are missing out on about 330 billion every year due to weak economic growth, an aging population, and poor health conditions, highlighting the severe challenges that the next Prime Minister will face. The left-leaning think tank "Resolution Foundation" stated that Andy Burnham, the former Mayor of Greater Manchester who will take over from Starmer in Downing Street on Monday, will need to develop a new fiscal strategy to prevent the worsening of debt, cuts in public spending, and tax increases. The foundation said that about two-thirds of this 330 billion gap is due to a slowdown in per capita economic growth since 2007.
