Tariff on fuel triggers a rush of transportation. The busiest container port in the United States, the Port of Los Angeles, set a new high in freight volume in June.
The busiest container port in the United States, the Port of Los Angeles, announced on Wednesday that its cargo volume in June reached a new record high for the same period, as various types of shippers from retailers to data center construction companies rushed to ship goods to avoid the impact of rising fuel costs and the upcoming new import tariffs imposed by the United States. Gene Seroka, Executive Director of the Port of Los Angeles, stated that the port handled a total of 1,002,734 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in June, a 12% increase from June 2025, making it the third time this historical trade gateway with 118 years of history has exceeded the 1 million TEU mark in a single month. The conflict between the United States and Israel with Iran has disrupted Middle Eastern and global shipping. The cost of marine fuel has surged, and some retailers and manufacturers are concerned about possible shortages of key raw materials and factory products or excessively high transport costs. The Trump administration plans to implement a new tariff strategy this month based on the "301 clause".
