Media reports pressure the cancellation of restrictions at the Ben Gurion Airport in Israel.
According to a report by the Israeli Public Broadcasting Corporation today, Israel has cancelled the restrictions on US military aerial refueling aircraft landing at Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv, following a request from the United States. The report states that the Israeli Airport Authority has issued instructions to the air traffic control department to allow US refueling aircraft to continue landing and parking at Ben Gurion Airport. This decision overturns an earlier directive from Israeli Transportation Minister Regev prohibiting US refueling aircraft from landing at Ben Gurion Airport.
The report also states that Ben Gurion Airport had previously asked for the US refueling aircraft to be moved to another location in order to free up parking spaces and avoid disrupting summer civilian flight operations. However, sources have indicated that given the ongoing escalation of tensions between the US and Iran, the US Central Command needs to maintain a high level of alertness for refueling aircraft and crew in Israel, leading to the US request for Israel to lift the restrictions.
During the most intense period of the US-Iran conflict this year, Israel had deployed around 90 US military aerial refueling aircraft within its borders, with 34 currently parked at Ben Gurion Airport and the southern Ramon Airport. Both the US and Israel had considered relocating some of the aircraft to other Israeli Air Force bases, but ultimately concluded that there were no feasible alternative options. As of now, Israeli officials have not responded to the above-mentioned report.
