US Commerce Secretary Howard Rattner called on Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix to speed up the expansion of memory chip production in the United States to help alleviate the global shortage of key components needed for the development of artificial intelligence. Rattner said at an event held by Micron Technology that he is in discussions with the two South Korean memory chip manufacturers, but refused to disclose specifics. He acknowledged that Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra may not be pleased with competitors expanding their presence in the United States, but stressed the need for the US to establish a more robust chip supply chain. "You know, he may not like this, but I hope to bring his competitors - Samsung and SK Hynix - to the United States to build factories," Rattner said. "Micron is paving the way. Now other companies will be jealous, right? They will have to follow suit."
