The number of heat-related deaths in Spain in June reached the highest level in over a decade.
The Spanish National Meteorological Agency posted on social media that June 2026 was the second hottest June since records began in 1961, only behind June 2025. According to preliminary data released by the agency, the average temperature in mainland Spain in June was about 3.2 degrees Celsius higher than normal. The prolonged heat wave has had significant public health impacts. According to Spain's daily mortality monitoring system, the number of deaths related to high temperatures in June reached 1,029, surpassing the 1,000 deaths in June 2017, and marking the highest number for the month since comparable records began in 2015.
