China's Sontor Group's Sontor Refinery Phase II expansion project in Ghana has officially started in the eastern port city of Tema. The project will increase the refinery's daily processing capacity from 40,000 barrels to 100,000 barrels. Ghanaian President Mahama said at the project's ribbon-cutting ceremony that the Phase II expansion project is of great significance to Ghana's economic development and is the type of investment urgently needed in Ghana. "This project will strengthen the industrial base, deepen the energy value chain, create job opportunities, support local industries, and promote Ghana's transformation into a modern industrial economy." Mahama praised the Phase I project of the Sontor Group, which began production in January 2024. He pointed out that against the backdrop of tensions in the Middle East and turmoil in the global oil market, this project has played a positive role in increasing Ghana's oil reserves and providing a buffer for supply. According to Sontor Group's Executive Chairman Xu Ningqian, after the completion of the Phase II project, the number of employees at the refinery will increase from 700 to about 1500.
