On the 23rd, United Nations Secretary-General spokesperson Dujarric stated at a regular press briefing that, according to observations by UN peacekeeping troops, since Lebanon and Israel declared a ceasefire on the 19th of this month, aside from sporadic gunfire and military reconnaissance activities, the ceasefire agreement has been generally adhered to, and large numbers of displaced Lebanese people have begun to return to their homes. He mentioned that the latest assessment shows that the extent of destruction in southern Lebanon is shocking, with over 11,000 residential buildings completely destroyed and another 2,200 buildings partially damaged. Additionally, many areas still have unexploded ordnance, posing a serious threat to the lives of civilians. The United Nations calls on all parties in the conflict to effectively protect the safety of civilians, adhere to the ceasefire agreement, and avoid escalation in order to ensure that displaced families can eventually return to their homes voluntarily, safely, and with dignity.
