Online sale of "fresh donkey meat" was found to contain horse-derived ingredients, a food company in Tengzhou, Shandong was fined.
On June 5th, the Shandong Provincial Market Supervision Administration's public WeChat account "Shandong Market Supervision" released a batch of typical cases related to food safety, including a case where a company used horse meat to pass off as donkey meat. The case showed that in February 2026, the Tengzhou City Market Supervision Bureau received a food safety risk assessment report from the General Administration of Market Supervision regarding Tengzhou Chengyou Food Co., Ltd.'s online platform operation of "fresh donkey meat." Upon testing, the batch of "fresh donkey meat" was found to contain horse-derived components, but no donkey-derived components, making it a case of food adulteration. It was found that the party involved actually purchased "fresh donkey meat" from outside the province which was actually mule meat. The party's act of operating with adulterated food violated Article 34 of the Food Safety Law of the People's Republic of China.
