Turkey launches an antitrust investigation against Meta and announces temporary measures targeting WhatsApp's closed ecosystem.
The Competition Authority of Turkey announced on June 5 that it has decided to initiate a formal investigation into Meta and simultaneously issued interim measures. The core allegation of the investigation is that Meta integrated its AI service Meta AI into WhatsApp while preventing third-party AI service providers from offering services to users through WhatsApp, allegedly violating relevant provisions of Turkey's Competition Law on abuse of market dominance. The Competition Authority determined that the aforementioned behavior constitutes a serious violation of competition rules, and in order to prevent irreparable damage before a final decision is made, it ruled to issue interim measures requiring Meta to create conditions for third-party general-purpose AI chatbots/assistants to provide services through WhatsApp, and not to set obstacles in fact or economically. Meta must fulfill its obligations within one month of receiving the formal decision notification, or else it will be subject to administrative fines.
